INDIVIDUALIZED ASSESSMENT AND THERAPY

The initial geriatric psychiatry consultation is key to understanding the current life situation and past experiences leading to the present mental health concern. Using a framework of openness, confidentiality, and catharsis, I offer Individualised formulations to help the person gain strength via their own values and virtues. Using pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy constructs, I endeavor to provide focused and short term interventions to assist the person on the path to recovery.

Dementia

Dementia is not just getting old and forgetting. It is when the person's quality of life suffers due to a change in cognition i.e. forgetting, getting lost easily, getting disorientated with time, difficulties in managing communication and finances, and managing other day to day affairs.

The family and carers also notice that the person is making mistakes that they normally would not.

When should I seek help?

● The early stage of dementia can mean a lot of change in your lifestyle and support structures.

● Your family doctor and the Alzheimer's society are your first starting point.

● If your condition is now severe, and you are in supported accommodation such as a nursing home, and you are having difficulty in coping, ask the staff to send me a referral via your family doctor and also ask the Behaviour Response Team at LHSC to assist.
